Blues
for Little Billy
COMMENTS:
One Jazz Fest I heard Michelle Shocked
sing a song about Little Billy, a friend of hers from the Treme neighborhood, one
of the oldest black areas in the United States, poor but proud of its
tradition. Little Billy got her name from her habit of singing old Billie Holiday
songs when she got sad and drank. Her teenage son was killed in a drive-by
shooting and at the Jazz Funeral that was held for him, Little Billy jumped onto
the coffin as it was being laid into the ground and danced to the Jazz
dirge.
